When I was in graduate school, I first heard the term “portable paradise.”  At the time, I didn’t know exactly what it meant.  I often find it is most helpful to experience something personally to really understand a teaching or learning.

Your portable paradise is something you carry with you wherever you go, whether you realize it or not.  It is a place of peace and inner joy.  Whether we are in the midst of hardship or having an amazing experience, we can be in the place of our portable paradise because what happens in the outer world is like a story that is being played out; it is transitory.  Our inner world can be one of calm and trust riding on the waves of life.  In Rudyard Kipling’s poem he writes: “ If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster - And treat those two impostors just the same.”  The ups and downs of life are impostors.  They are temporary occurrences that can change with the winds of time.  Whether we are experiencing Triumph or Disaster, we can still live from the place of our portable paradise, a place of permanent, as opposed to temporary, peace and joy.

As we approach the holiday season, it is a time we can meaningfully share our love and joy.  When we live from our place of portable paradise, the more joy we can share.  Think of ways can you live more from your portable paradise and then share that joy with others!

Live with Love and Live with Joy!
